Chapter 21

Ender

to dance with a prince

Isa finishes tying my hair into a complicated sort of knot and then steps back.

She gives me a bright smile. “You look wonderful, Lady Ender.”

I clear my throat. “You can just call me Ender, you know.”

Isa nods. “I wondered. Saile did say you weren’t one for formalities, but I wanted to be sure of it myself.”

I frown, confused. “What do you mean?”

She sighs, sits down on my bed. She leans her head against one of the posts. “Try not to hold it against me, will you?”

I nod. “Okay,” I say.

“I have met a lot of women that Saile has courted. Most of them are… fake, I suppose. They act one way around him and another when he’s nowhere to be seen. They insist they could care less about titles when he’s sitting beside them and then get angry when you don’t use them the minute he’s gone. I thought perhaps you would be like that.” She pauses. “But you’re not.”

Isa stands up and dusts her uniform off. She walks right over to me and wraps me in a hug. Shock overpowers my senses, and I hesitate but then slowly wrap my arms around her, too.

When she pulls away, there are tears pricking at her eyes. She says, “Saile has finally found his perfect match. I worried there wouldn’t be one.”

I can’t help but ask the question. “What about you?” I ask her. “Did you ever wonder if you were his perfect match?”

Isa laughs and says, “Ender, you are much closer to my match than he is. My choice in lovers does not involve men whatsoever.”

I blink, slightly confused. “Oh!” I say.

“Yes,” She laughs. “Anyway, I’ve got to get back to the kitchen. We’ve got a lot of food to bring up to the ballroom.” She turns and walks away.

But I stop her. “Wait,” I say.

She turns, raises an eyebrow. “Is there something you need?”

I shake my head, but I open my hand, and I use my blossoming magic to grow a brightly colored tulip. I hold it out to her. “Here,” I say. “This is for you. Just… something to make your night a little less dull, okay?”

She takes the tulip gently. Then she says, quiet enough I wonder if I’m not supposed to hear her, “His perfect match.” She looks up at me, says louder, “Thank you, Ender.”

When she turns to leave, I let her.

I practice my dancing until I hear a knock at my door.

It feels like my heart skips a beat. I rush over to it and yank it open, grinning at Saile on the other side.

His mouth falls open as he takes me in.

My smile fades as his expression darkens with desire. I’m half tempted to drag him inside and forget all about the ball, but I doubt our absence would go unnoticed.

Saile says, “You look beautiful.”

I smile at him. “I no longer look like the troll you first met?”

He laughs at me. “No,” he says. “You look more like the girl I’ve been thinking about for ages.
